REDMIX – Unpacking Mixedness for an Inclusive History
of the Red Sea,
1800s-2000s

Mixedness isn’t just a theme: it’s a lens to rethink the Red Sea.
The Red Sea has always been a melting pot of cultures, yet the histories of its people with mixed ancestry remain untold.
For centuries, it connected Africa, Asia and Europe, creating communities of people of mixed African, Arab, Asian, and European ancestry. REDMIX uncovers their hidden narratives by piecing together fragmented archives, oral histories, and memories. It offers the first comprehensive study of mixedness in the region from the 1800s to the present day.
Our goal? To build a digital archive centring the voices of mixed-ancestry people, proving that mixedness has always been central to the inclusive history of the Red Sea.

The REDMIX Archive
The REDMIX Archive is a multilingual digital repository providing structured access to interdisciplinary resources on mixedness in the Red Sea region (19th-21st centuries). It consolidates curated historical materials, scholarly research, and documentation through a searchable platform designed for academic and public use. The archive’s taxonomy facilitates cross-cultural analysis while preserving linguistic diversity of original sources, serving as both research infrastructure and digital preservation initiative.
