REDMIX – Unpacking Mixedness for an Inclusive History of the Red Sea, 1800s-2000s
Situated at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea offers a unique vantage point for the study of mixedness. The REDMIX project explores the roots and routes of mixed ancestry people – such as Afro-Arabs, Afro-Asians and Euro-Africans – through a bottom-up, long-term and interdisciplinary approach. Overcoming traditional regional and disciplinary divisions, REDMIX places mixed ancestry people at the centre of historical inquiry, integrating African, Middle Eastern and Critical Mixed Race Studies to contribute to both a history of mixedness in the Red Sea and a history of the Red Sea from the perspective of mixed ancestry people.
The launch event of the REDMIX project, Unlocking the Red Sea’s Mixedness, will feature a keynote lecture and thematic sessions. The event will explore the historical dynamics of the Red Sea, the role of mixed ancestry people in its socio-political transformations, and the methodological innovations that guide REDMIX. By bringing together experts from different disciplines, the launch will lay the groundwork for a pioneering exploration of the history of mixedness in the region and its wider implications.
