The documentary “Rico’s Groove” gives an account of the incredible life trajectory of Giovanni “Rico” Bonsignori. Rico’s father was from Pietrasanta (Italy), and Rico’s mother was from Axum (Ethiopia). He grew up in Asmara (Eritrea), and then moved to Addis Ababa, where he soon became “the godfather of Ethiopian Jazz” – as modern bass players inspired by his sound like to call him. His life story and career are dense and intertwined with historical turning points: from the Empire of Hailé Selassié to the DERG regime. This documentary, produced by REDMIX (ERC based at UNITO) in collaboration with Soniethio (Innsbruck University), is written by Gianpaolo Chiriacò and Valentina Fusari. The director is Francesco Dragone.
